Realising that you're actually an awesome individual
Posted on Monday 20th September 2021 at 10:48 am by Jon Kestell

Why our personality traits and values that fuel stress, anxiety and low self-esteem are not always things we should consider to be negative.

Many people who suffer with stress or conditions such as anxiety and low self-esteem often get drawn into believing that the factors fuelling these feelings are negative traits or values.

Some of these include:

• Excessive worrying (I care too much)
• Imposter syndrome (I'm not the person people think I am)
• Performance anxieties (I don't know what i'm doing, I don't want to fail)
• An Inability to cope (Why do others seem to be coping but I'm not?)

If this is you it is important to realise that you are not alone, many other people experience the same thoughts and beliefs every day. Over focusing on these outcomes often intensifies stress, anxiety and low self-esteem to the point where functioning on a day-to-day basis becomes a struggle.

Think about it, are they really personality traits and values that we should be experiencing negative thoughts, feelings and behaviours from?

Many sufferers struggle to identify the positive aspects behind these conditions such as:

• Caring about their job, family, friends and how people perceive them
• Wanting to be a good person and do the right thing
• Worrying about security for themselves and their family
• Wanting to achieve perfection or do things well
• Not wanting to let people down

Are these really things that we should allow to have a negative impact on us?

Of course not, these are all traits and values that should be seen as positives in people and if you can relate to this you should feel proud of who you are.

Yes, we sometimes need to keep these in check and not allow our thoughts to reach extremes, that comes with practice and learning skills such as positive self-talk, acceptance and self-compassion.

If you are experiencing high levels of stress, anxiety or low self-esteem take time out to process why this is happening and focus on who you are and the importance of these personality traits & values in society.

We often find that it is the kindest, most caring people who struggle with these conditions and being one of these people should be something you celebrate.

You are unique, accept who you are and love yourself simply for being you. We are all human, we are not perfect and we can often find ourselves falling short of our own high expectations. If you have tried your best there is nothing more that you could have done.

Remember you are awesome!
